History lesson for folks freaking out about Alberta curriculum rewrite.

1. Curriculum used to be rewritten regularly in Alberta, with every major course updated each decade.

That all changed in 2009-10, with idea of "Inspiring Education" to rewrite curriculum all at once. This was done because discovery learning school of thought wanted a complete takeover of school system, downplaying teaching of knowledge in favour of inquiry and discovery.

2/x
This takeover was well underway when terrible results came out in Alberta related to discovery math. Discovery math was pushed in curriculum starting in 1996, then again 2007-08.
Teachers and parents rebelled against discovery math fiasco.

The Progressive Conservative discovery learning curriculum was delayed, but not killed. NDP took over, made some good changes in math curriculum, but was pushing a curriculum with even more leftist messaging in Social Studies. Again, there were questions about this.

Curriculum has't been rewritten in any significant way in more than 15 years.

It needs some changes. In math, for example, it needs to go back to excellent previous curriculum of 1990s. In other subjects, pursuit of knowledge should be stressed. I hope that is outcome.
