NEW PAPER THREAD
Has COVID affected Medicaid enrollment? Job loss frequently means insurance loss - for many, Medicaid is a safety net that offers coverage when they lose their employer plan. But how many people have enrolled in Medicaid during the pandemic? (1/6) https://twitter.com/Health_Affairs/status/1291465330590658561

Federal enrollment data for the COVID period aren’t available yet, but we ( @EGolberstein @saynikpay) collected Medicaid enrollment data from 25 states’ reports and found that enrollment has grown by more than 1.7m people across these states from March 1 – June 1(2/6)
Medicaid may be particularly important for adults without children – enrollment among expansion populations grew the fastest. Some states say more than 20% increases in the size of the expansion enrollment (3/6)
Increases in Medicaid coverage were not related to the change in unemployment. This could be due to differences in state enrollment policies, lags in Medicaid enrollment after job loss, or other policies in the CARES Act, like freezing dis-enrollment from Medicaid (4/6)
Our paper only looks at enrollment through June 1, but many states are reporting increases in July as well. There may be a relationship between job loss and Medicaid enrollment, we just need to wait a bit longer to see it (5/6)
Others ( @joanalker1 @xpostfactoid) are also keeping their eye on how COVID is affecting Medicaid enrollment and we will continue to track state reports as the pandemic continues (6/6)
