Maybe instead of yelling at people for “wasting” $20 on a 50/50 ticket or $5 on a coffee while they’re struggling, we could fight the capitalist system that continues to oppress and keep us all fighting each other while not building trebuchets to fling the rich into space?
There seems to be a lot of discussion around how people who buy a 50/50 ticket are only here to support sports and not capable of also supporting all the charities, festivals, events, people who need support during this extremely shitty year.
This article from the Journal puts the 50/50 up versus the Fringe. I sincerely doubt that people who were putting $20 for a chance to get over a million dollars were doing so while flipping off festivals & other orgs. It shouldn’t be pit against each other https://edmontonjournal.com/entertainment/local-arts/baffled-by-the-raffle-disparity-between-oilers-50-50-mania-and-fringe-donations-reflects-edmontons-priorities/wcm/f74e73a3-860e-4a8f-84c9-c47376d12a66/
So many people are feeling the pressure of this pandemic. People have lost jobs, are operating on reduced hours, are feeling cut off from their normal lives. The 50/50 draw is a little glance of hope for folks. It’s $20 toward entertainment with the chance of changing their lives
When I asked people what they would spend the money on yesterday, overwhelmingly it was basic necessities. Home. Transportation. Bills and debt. Helping others.
Our fight shouldn’t be with each other. We are all trying to do the best we can.

And if you really want to focus your energy on something, let’s challenge the @Oil_Foundation to spend that money helping all the groups we see the need for. @pekiwewinyeg @blmyeg @HIVEdmonton @sacetalks @edmontonfringe etc. There are tons of groups and people who need help.
Want to support a local organization with a non-sports 50/50? There are three others I know of happening right now:
@FurRSQ
@FortEdPark
@ChristmasBureau
