People saying that paying 400$ for a custom made outfit by a small designer is capitalism don't know what they're talking about. Let me clarify. In these 400$ is included:
- craftmanship, the garment fit much better and is very well made. If taken care of properly... 1/6
it will last way longer than the cheaper option you can get on wish.
- taxes, yes, we pay taxes, but contrary to the big corporations like H&M you most likely give your money to, we don't make as much profit by lessening our production cost (ie, we don't do children work... 2/6
and we pay our workers)
-materials are expensive. Quality fabric cost money, duh.
-we have to get a salary out of our work. Yes we eat like everyone else and yes, we have rent to pay. Most small creators underpay themselves as it is. 3/6
We should charge at least 30$/hour because craftmanship is not a skill you get easily but most of us don't because a lot of people can't afford that and we try to be accomodating. Let's do maths :
A dress is at least 8hours of work. Multiply by 30 = 240$
4/6
Add taxes (say 25% overall) : 240 + 60 = 300
Add quality materials : 100
That's 400$ the price you refuse to pay. And that's ok! We don't all have the money for that. But don't shame small creators for producing quality work w/ fair wages when you consume fast fashion. 5/6
So, 400$ for a custom made outfit is not capitalism. Kindly shut your mouth when you don't know what you're talking about.
That was my TED Talk, thanks for hearing me. 6/6
