I remain fascinated by the lie that won’t die: that the protests in Portland have been “peaceful.”

All of the below tweets are from the last month, courtesy of @PortlandPolice, that directly contradict the idea that what’s going on is anything but violent.

🧵thread🧵
To start, it shouldn’t be hard for journalists to take a quick look at the twitter equivalent of a police scanner for an area convulsed by protests for the last 75 nights or so.

Even a cursory scan shows the notion that what’s going on is peaceful is absurd.

All last night👇
Here’s numerous tweets from two nights ago about attempted break ins and a potential explosive device.

This is while the ‘protests’ are ongoing (third tweet).

Do these things happen peacefully?
And how about the equipment that @PortlandPolice have been confiscating?

Do you always bring your katanas to a peaceful protest? How about Molotov cocktails? Do they come in a peaceful variety? Improvised peaceful explosives perhaps?
Doesn’t anyone - anyone at all - think that it’s curious that people seem to be shot or stabbed every night at these ‘peaceful’ protests?
This is apparently what passes as good news huh.
Perhaps the fire and destruction are peaceful?
There’s an enormous metaphor here.
This to me seems like the crux of it.

A large crowd gathers. Some people (maybe the real peaceful protestors?) suggest that it’s a bad idea to barricade the doors of a federal courthouse.

They promptly get shouted down.
I’m not sure I agree with the “remain” part of the “remain peaceful” urging here, @PortlandPolice.
Apparently launching fireworks and explosives still falls under the mostly peaceful heading.
Oh and mortars. Mostly peaceful mortars.
Perhaps the officer was simply peacefully struck with the hammer?
For anyone questioning why the federal government got involved in response to a federal building being hit with “flares and other incendiaries” and vandalized and lit on fire I have an idea.

It’s the violence and vandalization and fire.
Perhaps - hear me out here - perhaps the reason teargas was used was because people were “throwing projectiles and [were] armed with clubs hammers and other weapons”?

Just a thought.
Again with the metaphors.
And in case you’re wondering what this does for the rest of the city, protestors are not only blocking off traffic, preventing emergency vehicles from getting where they need to be, but the PD can only handle emergency calls as a result.
Seems hard to imagine that the **240% increase in shootings** this July compared to last is a coincidence, no?

And the residential areas aren’t safe from all of this either.
And in case you’re wondering what it does to local businesses, well. Maybe the protestors are trying to find the bread in the Nike store to feed their families.
Doesn’t this just look like a relaxing and peaceful night on the town?
So to recap, we’ve got an American city in the grip of anarchy, violence, and nightly unrest, and we’re told that these are “mostly peaceful” rather than bedlam.

That’s bullshit. And anyone with a set of eyes can see it.
And again **all of this is on the public record**

There’s just no effort made to explain the wishcasting of these protests as noble, nonviolent activities.

It’s a classic example of what I like to call the “piss on your leg and tell you it’s raining” school of journalism.
And it has to stop.

If there’s any hope in restoring trust in the media among everyday Americans, this type of outright journalistic malpractice and lying has got to stop.
Also, if you doubt that anyone is calling this “mostly peaceful” well boy do I have a thread for you. https://twitter.com/drewholden360/status/1287895193103015937?s=21 https://twitter.com/drewholden360/status/1287895193103015937
