THREAD: Did you know @CMPD published its internal affairs annual report last month? I didn't until I stumbled upon it online today. There is a lot in here I'd imagine the public would be interested in reading. https://charlottenc.gov/CMPD/Organization/Documents/OfcoftheChief/InternalAffairs/2019_IA_Annual_Report.pdf #CMPD #accountability #Defenders #CLT
Let's start with complaints. External complaints against @cmpd were up in 2019, while internal complaints were down. Use of force complaints were way up last year. Body camera complaints were up too. #Defenders
While police interaction increased slightly year over year, use of force events increased by almost 15%. There were 453 @CMPD use of force events in 2019. That's more than one a day. #Defenders
Needless to say, very few @CMPD officers are charged with a crime, but the number of employees criminally charged increased in 2019. You can see the breakdown below. Nine compared to five each of the previous two years. #Defenders
Thankfully, the report shows no in-custody @CMPD deaths last year. Sadly, we know that won't be the case in 2020 due to the death of Harold Easter, which remains under @CharMeckDA review. https://www.wcnc.com/article/news/local/before-cmpd-in-custody-death-harold-easter-said-im-going-to-die/275-2bf854f0-9d15-4311-be3e-f0bd6af661c2 #Defenders
. @CMPD reports 70% of all complaints are sustained. While punishments varied, 15 officers were cited for termination in 2019 compared to 12 in each of the previous two years. I requested notice of dismissals for 2019 and 2020 in June. I'll let you know when I receive #Defenders
