I was looking into
@tiktok_us
's SEO efforts. With over 60M pages indexed in Google there must be some interesting findings.

Tweetstorm! /1
It starts with a massive amount of growing incoming links; Januari 20M. August 100M (!) live links.

This is especially interesting because TikTok is app-first.

But by making it easy to share a video, with a nice link, this is clearly working out. /3
What are they having indexed?

All of it. Every single username and video, individual song and UG tag is indexable in Google.

And for each url they provide 16 (!) hreflang language/country variations.

OMG. /4
So, how is their tech?

They have a javascript app (next.js?). Only the <title>, meta, schema and h2 is served straight from the html.

Good to see, nice and clean http://schema.org  formatting /5
But to discover any relevant content links <a> Google must render the page first.

Seems like a quick win to add dynamic-rendering (like youtube and twitter).

Are there any SEO bugs? 🤪

It seems the local canonical is not setup properly.

For each page, the page canonical is set to /?lang=en, even while you are on a local /?lang=es.

/7
Also random parameters aren't stripped from the hreflang.

This will sent Google on a wild goose chase.

Is TikTok winning?

Of the 4M keywords TikTok is ranking on, only 40K are in a top 3 spot.

Spot checking influencers shows TikTok is not yet beating Instagram, Facebook, Youtube in Google.

My SEO tips for @tiktok_us:
1. noindex low value pages (help Googlebot out)
2. focus on username/name keywords (to beat #insta)
3. dynamic rendering to quickly discover new videos (less work for Google)
4. smarter hreflang implementation

Google pushing only YouTube rips on queries for TikTok biggest stars is pretty awkward.

Also, no mention of TikTok in the Knowledge Panel under social profiles.

@JohnMu Google can do better here no?
