To say I'm excited about this is an understatement. The American Educator is my favourite publication, the one that's had the most impact on me as a teacher. @AFTunion @P_A_Kirschner https://twitter.com/LisaHansel/status/1291429993210355712
If you work in education and you're not aware of the absolute treasure trove that is the American Educator magazine, here's a short thread of essential AE reads that will blow your mind.
1. 'Putting Students on the Path to Learning' by @P_A_Kirschner et al. If you were aways suspicious of the notion that 'kids learn best when they discover things for themselves' then happy Christmas. https://www.aft.org/sites/default/files/periodicals/Clark.pdf
2. 'Students Remember...What They Think About' by @DTWillingham. This had a huge impact on me and encapsulates what I feel is his most important idea: knowledge needs to be meaningful. Contains the immortal line 'memory is as thinking does'. https://www.aft.org/periodical/american-educator/summer-2003/ask-cognitive-scientist-students-rememberwhat
3. 'Using Oral Language to Build Young Children's Vocabularies' by Isabel Beck et al. The authors of this wrote the best book I've read on reading and vocabulary. This is a great introduction to some of their ideas. https://www.aft.org/periodical/american-educator/spring-2003/taking-delight-words
4. 'Rosenshine's Principles of Instruction'. Widely known now but if you're in your first year of teaching and unaware of it then this is the nearest thing we have to the 10 commandments of teaching. https://www.aft.org/sites/default/files/periodicals/Rosenshine.pdf
