Something I was discussing with @laozumyg: I think proship circles should definitely address racism more. Taking the cheng/xian drama for example: I see many people saying "so what that it's incest?" but shouldn't we be focusing on the fact that Chinese ppl said
Time and time again that it's not incest? And they get ignored? Of course that the "ship and let ship" is a valid statement, but the dismissal of Chinese voices about Chinese media in western circles is a huge problem too. I feel the same way about the whole fujo discourse
Sometimes, that we focus too much on "it's ok for women to consume sexual mlm content" and not enough in the "people misusing Japanese terms is incredible disrespectful and kinda racist". If we address the racist undertones in fandoms and the fact that western lens are not
"more right" than any other the discussions about letting people consume and create the fiction they want will be much easier.
I even saw someone saying "current anime is for incel and pedos" and getting 2k+ notes and like... Of course this statement has a "puritan" problem but it's also incredibly disrespectful and kinda racist. We should have the same energy to fight both problems.
The person saying it was not even Japanese too (as always!). This kid of generalization is so stupid and implies that Japanese people are a bunch of dumb people who are super ok with pedo and incels, and even cater to them! Isn't it disrespectful?
I'm not even going to address the fact that this statement is simply wrong (and they must not watch many anime to say that), but also that this completely overlooks many cultural aspects as to why anime is the way it is. It also ignores the MANY discussions we have in JP
Circles about it. Again, I think people should be much more mindful when consuming things that are from a different culture and in the end are not made to cater them. This goes for danmei, BL, everything. Twitter has this habit of seeing everything through Western lens
And then being accidentally (or not so accidentally) racist. When we understand that different cultures have different relations to fiction and media, and learn to respect other voices, then the "ship and let ship" will come much easier.
