apropos of nothing, here is your daily reminder that the 1950s-60s model of 'traditional marriage' with a male breadwinner & stay-at-home mom that white evangelicals have tried to pass off as immutable & eternal was an historical aberration
to wit, the church barely cared about het marriage for the first 8 centuries or so. if two people said they were married, that was good enough! things like having a priest present became more important when they wanted that sweet sweet recurring revenue & political power.
the malleability of marriage through the ages is quite stunning if your primary conception of it comes from white evangelicalism. i've had multiple galaxy brain moments while listening to this book: https://www.scribd.com/audiobook/333233379/Marriage-a-History-How-Love-Conquered-Marriage
furthermore, the 50s/60s model that white evangelicals and other social conservatives pine for was made possible by massive federal spending like the GI Bill and was only really achievable by white people. even their gung-ho capitalism economic takes are BS!
