Story time: We have new babies this week! These white knee tarantulas were intercepted by USFW when being smuggled for the pet trade. This “evidence “ now has a new home and a job in education

We will use these little ladies in our educational programs, and (hopefully) to breed to reduce pressure on wild populations from the pet trade. This is how you ship a wee tarantula— lots of padding for fragile exoskeletons
They do NOT enjoy being transported. We know that because here is a bald tarantula butt. This species has very itchy butt hair, and kicking it at attackers is their primary defense, not biting

Poor babies! But as soon as they settle in and grow a bit, they will shed their old exoskeleton and make new itchy butt hairs. Like our chonky adult white knee, Kim.
Why yes, that does mean this is..... Lil’ Kim #SorryNotSorry
And! This species is not a good beginner tarantula! They fling that itchy butt hair around when disturbed, and are always up for a snack. They will lunge at anything they think might be food (hence chonkyness) #BabyGotBack
