Putting out a positive reminder, all those animated pitches you’re dreaming of, they don’t have to be animated. Please try making a comic, or even an animatic, an illustrated book! And those don’t even have to have the goal as a presentation for an animated pitch!
Pros and cons:
Pros:
You want to be able to break some stereotypes and tropes? You aren’t going to get a note from up on high afraid of losing viewership/sponsors because you want to show a dude whose good at cooking, or they’re afraid of having an action/adventure lead.
You can be more nuanced with your story telling, you want that quiet moment and not non stop dialogue, you got it! (studios get scare if kids are not constantly laughing, they assume they are disengaged)
You can explore personal themes!
You don’t have to wait two years once your episode locks for people to see it, & the story only stops when you want it to, not when a network decides they no longer have the budget. You OWN your work. If a studio does come calling, you can negotiate a better deal, pre-existing IP
Ok the cons:
You are your own boss/ no one is paying you. It’s not a realistic way to make a living. BUT, if you’re working in a creative field, what you learn there will make you a more rounded artist, and creating on your own terms outside of work will feed back into your life.
You will miss out on working with a team. One of the big plusses w animation is creating and seeing what others will bring to a project. It’s no longer “yours”, but it can be an amazing trade off and experience.
If you end up making physical copies of your work, storing it in your apartment kinda sucks, so, I dunno.
But holding a book in your hands that exists because you took that leap, getting kind messages from people when you don’t expect it, is pretty priceless.
Stories will find their viewers/readers eventually.
An animated show is a great dream, but there are a lot of hurdles and random luck involved, don’t limit yourself to just that.
I saw so many great pitches yesterday that I couldn’t keep up, there’s not enough studio money to -
Make them all, but there’s infinite space to start putting your story out there on your own terms. ❤️/
