the atom bomb was the worst single act of war in human history. It was not "necessary"; it enabled the US to exert its imperialist will without restraint for the 75 years since. America has been holding the world hostage ever since, demanding compliance or promising obliteration.
all historical writing about the US post-war demands being filtered through this lens to be honest and accurate, but the vast majority of it engages with it as an abberation, as the "necessary evil" narrative spoon-fed to them over the years.
to wrap your head around the fact that kids- kids!- are taught this was necessary is a deep, despairing glimpse into the sickness of the American poltical psyche. Four generations raised & radicalized in service of capital & empire on complete and utter fictions across the board.
America is inseparable from the engine of imperialism. American Prosperity & comfort are fueled by blood and they always have been. we are conditioned from birth to value this personal comfort above all else, and taught this comfort is only possible here, and with capital.
when you have four generations raised on that message, that threat of force, that calvinistic belief in predestination that we are the ones who deserve prosperity- you get a populace that will not blink at mass death, that will not change to stop it. It becomes an acceptable cost
