I eagerly look forward to a legitimate criticism of cancel culture that doesn't involve some sleight of hand equating legitimate attacks on innocent people who were misrepresented and people who think Twitter shouldn't give Nazis a platform. But it's still weirdly elusive!
It's wild, because in truth, innocent people get falsely accused and swarmed and bullied on Twitter all the time, often in ways that seriously damage their mental health and their careers.
But critics of cancel culture mostly ignore the actual victims, who tend to be people with marginalized identities or less prestigious jobs than New York Times columnist. Protecting people from silencing isn't really the point. Protecting the powerful from criticism is.
Like, where were the opponents of "cancel culture" when I was being dogpiled and bullied for saying that Tara Reade's accusations should have been more carefully investigated before being aired?
Nowhere, because the critics of "cancel culture" shared the contempt that those bullies had for feminists, and don't care one tiny bit if those who speak out for women's equality are hammered out of the public sphere with bad faith attacks. Speaks volumes, it truly does.
