I’ve said it before, and I’ll say it again, but we need to abolish the charts. They are not fit for purpose
If labels can manipulate sales and decide what days or weeks certain sales are counted on (which has happened on two high profile "chart battles" this year) The what are we even doing here?
But most importantly, if you can't explain in one sentence to the average person on the street, how the charts are calculated then in my opinion you have lost the essence of what the chart should be.
And moreover. We don't need them anymore. There are so many other more interesting and accurate ways you can measure an artists success or fanbase. We should be celebrating those rather than desperately clinging on to an antiquated system
1 last thing. This isn't a "All the music in the charts is rubbish" thing. The Joel Corry record is a tune, the Taylor album is great. I just think that as an industry we need to put much less time and effort into a system that's mechanics are outdated and easy to manipulate
