I am so happy Rogue is here. I don't know whose idea it was, maybe editorial, maybe Jim Cheung just likes drawing her, but I love it. And let me tell you why: She is, and always has been the most relevant LGTB ally in Marvel Comics. Thread/
Let's start from the beginning: she was raised by two women in love. This was subtext for a long time, but there was no doubt. Destiny and Mystique were in love, and raised Rogue as their own child (this was, btw, Claremont's plan for Rogue)
I know Mystique and Rogue's relationship has been... difficult at times, but the core has always been of absolute love. If there is a scene that, for me, defines Rogue as a character, is this one:
Then her first encounter with Alpha Flight and NorthStar in particular. It could be argued that she acquired that knowledge through intrusion, but what is interesting is what she did with that information.
Nothing. She did nothing. At all. She doesn't struggle, debating internally what to do. Even though JP was an adversary at this point (and a bit of a jerk, let's be honest) she covers for him, and doesn't address the situation with him, she knows it is not her place to do so.
I'm looking at you, Young Jean.
Worth noting is that years later she put her life on the line to save JP, twice, first from mind control and then from insanity.
During JP's wedding, she has a moment to think of her moms.
Here we see her being the friend Bobby needed in a difficult time. Like Emma, it is very probable that Rogue knew Bobby was gay even before he did. There is A LOT of subtext here.
Which brings us to Wiccan and Hulkling. During Children's Crusade, and despite being on opposite sides of the fight, Rogue has a moment to give her support to this poor kid and his mom going through A LOT (this was quickly swept under the rug with Remender... but I digress)
There is more, but maybe it is me reading too much between the lines... anyway, I like Rogue, and thanks for coming to my TED Talk.
