“How do you find an audience who needs you?”

By shipping content that has a clear X and Y.

X = a specific set of people

Y = something they’re aspiring to do well but could use some assistance (crutch)

Let me elaborate 👇🏽

(A thread 🧵)
Riches are in the niches 💰

This is an age old advice but no one seems to get it

It feels very limiting to a creative person to just narrow down your curiosity

But building an audience is about adding value consistently and you can’t do that well if you are too broad
Pick a niche 🎯

Eventually you can go broader but in the beginning, start small and find a niche

It starts with picking X

X = a specific set of people

Don’t go out of your line of sight here. Find people with a similar identity as yours. Designers/ devs/ consultants etc
Pick an aspiration 🚀

Once you identified the group, pick an aspiration they’d die for (Y)

Your content will not work if there’s no gravitational pull

A lot of people struggle here because it has to very specific

You have to experiment a lot here
Let’s review some good examples:

http://Trends.vc  was built by my friend @DruRly

X = VCs & founders (very clear group)

Y = aspiring to discover opportunities before others

His content is a crutch that helps X achieve Y week after week

He built trust w quality
Another example is http://buildinpublic.xyz

X = founders/makers

Y = aspiring to build an audience for their products or projects

BIP serves content that assists X in that journey of Y by sharing interviews, insights, tips and resources etc
The more powerful, relevant and meaningful Y is to X, the stronger your word of mouth would be 😀

And trust me, word of mouth is the holy grail of marketing ⚡️

I had learned a lot of these lessons on niches thru failure & experiments so I’m always willing to share/help others
If you loved this advice, please get started on building an audience

You’ll never regret it!
