French President Macron is being mobbed in devastated Gemmayzeh in Beirut. He’s hugging them. “These people are terrorists” some people shout. They’re referring to the Lebanese government.
And, “Thawra!” (revolution)
And, “Thawra!” (revolution)
Now they’re shouting loudly: “The people want the fall of the regime”
Macron just pushed aside bodyguards to hug a woman. It's an amazing scene. A world president striding among angry crowds at the scene of a Middle East explosion. Usually VIPS just shake hands with officials and get out fast.
Macron just called for “a new political system” in Lebanon. It’s what many Lebanese have been calling for since October. This visit is a huge pr coup in Lebanon
Macron is wearing a black tie in his meeting with President Aoun and PM Hassan Diab, a sign of mourning for the dead in the Beirut explosion. Aoun & Diab are not. This photo is being widely shared, with this observation noted
"Macron waded through cheering crowds in the devastated streets of Beirut Thursday...doing what no senior Lebanese leader had done."
Some are calling this imperialist & colonialist, etc. But Lebanese need to feel someone cares. No one else has even tried http://www.naharnet.com/stories/en/273992-macron-s-moment-amid-cheering-crowds-in-devastated-beirut
