PSA: For authors making their own book covers, unless you're using Unsplash or other site that credits the original photographer, do not trust the 'free image' sites to actually hold copyrights to their images.
A lot of these sites will take images from content creators 1/5
2/5
and repost them without permission as 'Free.'
Why is this bad? Not only are you ripping off a content creator, but you're opening yourself up for potential lawsuits if you self-publish.
There's a way to check though, with a reverse google image search. Do this with ANY
3/5
images you plan on using.
Go to http://images.google.com , and either search by URL or upload the image. This will show you all instances of the image in all sizes and formats. It will take some digging, but you should be able to find the original poster and what
4/5
THEY posted the copyright as.
A refresher:
copyrighted=you can't use..
royalty free= you can use, but you need to purchase rights.
creative commons=you can use, but there are sometimes restrictions where you have to include attribution.
5/5
Especially because as authors we know the effort it takes to create content, please be respectful of the work it takes to not only create images but the amount of practice it takes to get to that caliber and do your due diligence.
