Today is my last day in Palestine. Impossible to summarise 4 years in a few lines but it’s been the greatest privilege to spend time in this beautiful land, get to know its hospitable people & contribute in a modest way to improving the lives of some of the most vulnerable 1/4
I wish to thank most sincerely the dedicated staff, past and present @irlrepramallah, Government figures & officials I’ve worked with, both in Ramallah and in Dublin, my EU colleagues & local humanitarian & development partners in Palestine. 2/4
Regrettably, the period has been marked by a complete absence of negotiations; ongoing illegal settlement expansion; the continuing blockade of Gaza; widespread violations of Palestinians’ human rights; & a failure to convene elections or to achieve reconciliation. 3/4
The serious threat of de jure annexation by Israel of parts of the West Bank has finally focused world attention on the moribund MEPP and may give some new impetus. I look forward to continuing to contribute to Irish policy in my new role as Deputy Political Director @dfatirl 4/4
