Just bc a faculty member is nice to you (another faculty member), doesn’t mean they aren’t abusive to trainees. There are so many toxic advisors out there and no real system to help trainees bc “well the PI has grants” or “the PI has good science” or “tenure”.
There are plenty of people out there that are AMAZING scientists that can fill these positions that could also have grants, great science, be supportive mentors, & supportive community members.
We, as a community, have to choose to not allow this abusive and toxic behavior and have consequences for when people are this way. And listen when people raise flags! Bc flags are always raised, they are just usually ignored by faculty bc “that person is nice to me”.
We need to support better resources & good mentorship & it needs to happen yesterday. It’s frustrating to see people go through the same kind of abuse over & over & only a big huge event accomplishes anything to break the cycle of trainees getting hurt.
