This is such a perfect example of modern innovation in action — wireless charging, which saves us like 0.001 seconds every time we plug in our phones, uses up to *50% more energy*.

Nearly imperceptible convenience, at massive social cost https://onezero.medium.com/wireless-charging-is-a-disaster-waiting-to-happen-48afdde70ed9
To everyone chiming in here saying it's really not all that much power, you shouldn't be worrying about this—too bad! I am! and here's why:
If we do not change our attitudes towards innovation + design ethics period, we will continue to produce wasteful stuff—some of which will inspire even more wasteful stuff.

Phone chargers may not be much power, but what about electric car chargers? https://www.pluglesspower.com/
Once we inaugurate proofs of concept on the grounds that convenience is all, we embed that thinking into a whole network of 'innovation' that is apt to replicate the prior principles.
There are tons of things that people might like to charge wirelessly, and thus wastefully. If we are able to make it clear that this is a bad idea, and that efficiency is a social good that should matter at least as much as convenience, why not do so?
