TIL: The biggest retailer in India is not DMart or Future Group

It's actually a PSU from Tamil Nadu which controls wholesale & retailing of Indian made foreign liquor (IMFL) in the entire state 🙏

- Over 3.2 billion $ revenue
- 7000+ retail outlets

A thread on TASMAC 🥃🥃

1/
Tamil Nadu had a long history of alcohol prohibition from 1937. It was briefly lifted during the 70s & 80s

In 1983, TASMAC (Tamil Nadu State Marketing corporation) was established to be in charge of wholesale liquor sales in the state for periods when prohibition was lifted

2/
In 2001, finally the prohibition was lifted again and it was to stay that way.

TASMAC again started wholesaling liquor to retail shops across TN. For retail stores, the government issued licenses to liquor shops and bars

3/
But many a times there were cartels formed by these retailers and they would forge numbers in order avoid taxes. Thereby causing a loss to the state revenues.

So in 2003, TN government made TASMAC sole retailer of alcohol. It made TASMAC a monopoly with no other player left

4/
TASMAC is a PSU which is governed by a board comprising of IAS officers. To ease management, they have divided the state in 5 regions : Chennai, Coimbatore, Madurai, Trichy and Salem. Each region is governed by a regional manager.

5/
The regions are further subdivided into 33 districts run by individual district managers.

TASMAC has over 30,000 employees and manages 7000+ retail outlets across TN

Retail shops don't have any names. Instead they have a unique number. They are named as TASMAC shop "Number"
6/
TASMAC revenues have grown at a rapid pace since it's inception rising close to 20% YoY.

Last year, TASMAC clocked 31,157 crores INR (close to 3.2 billion $ revenues)

Hard liquor like whiskey, dum, brandy and vodka accounts for about 80% of sales. And beer for remaining 20%

7/
TASMAC sells close to 19.2 lac bottles of IMFL is and about 9.6 lac cans of beer on a daily basis.

That's the reason during covid lockdown the state wa losing close to 90 crores INR daily

8/
That's why the TN government opened the shops at the earliest possible opportunity and then this happened 🤦‍♂️

9/
Major edit: Though TASMAC is bigger than DMart, Big Bazar, Trent and many other retail chains by Revenues.

Reliance retail is the biggest retailer in India by revenue 🤦‍♂️🤦‍♂️
