As promised, a thread about a rather special train, the TMST (Trans Manche Super Train). This was the project name for the high-speed train designed to link London, Paris and Brussels via the Channel Tunnel when it opened in 1994
Based on the French TGV, the design was adapted to run in the UK where our trains are not as tall or wide.
It had to cope with 3 different power systems supplied by overhead wires or third rail (UK).
Furthermore, the signalling systems of 3 different countries and 4 networks including the Channel Tunnel would need to be used.
Suppliers from Belgium, France and the UK all contributed to the train. The front of the power car was designed in Leicester..
There were concerns that passing through the Channel Tunnel at 160 km/h would have a hypnotic effect on the driver so the cab window was made very small compared with other trains.
The train was designed to be split in two if necessary in an emergency to get out of the Channel Tunnel. Put everyone in one half, uncouple the other and off you go!
Platforms: Traditionally they are different heights in the UK, France and Belgium. Solution: 2 extendable steps. UK high platforms: Top step only. Other countries: Both steps. Clever eh?
To be continued...
A full length (3 capitals) TMST is 387 metres long. 2 power cars plus 18 passenger vehicles.
31 full length sets were built plus an extra power car. Numbered 3999, it could replace one of its classmates if required. It has always been much sought after by rail enthusiasts wanting to underline the number in their spotting book!
The year is 1993. How do you deliver bits of a brand-new train from France and Belgium to the UK? If the tunnel isn't ready, you stick them on a train ferry! ⬇️ https://twitter.com/EurostarGeorge/status/897340785213001728?s=19
No thread on the TMST would be complete without the distinctive sound these trains make when arriving and departing. Nothing else sounds quite like it!
A train on the Thames: Back in 2004, for eurostar's 10th anniversary, a TMST power car was put on a barge as a publicity stunt. You can't get much closer to the city centre than that!
