the whitewashing of fate the winx saga and its terribly harmful impact: a thread
months ago, netflix announced that winx club, one of the biggest cartoons of our childhood, was getting a live action adaptation produced by them. needless to say that i was very excited and hyped about these news for various reasons:
winx club is a big part of our childhood but it is the also the most culturally diverse show of the early 2000s, featuring musa, an asian. flora, a latina and aisha, a black girl amongst its main characters. unfortunately, 2 of them had their ethnicity completely erased
musa and flora are both being played by white women. yes, netflix hired two purely caucasian women, elisha applebaum and eliot salt, to play the role of an asian and a latina character respectively. in flora's case its a bit complicated so i'll explain it before continuing
eliot salt plays a 'new' character named terra who is apparently just replacing flora and not affiliated to her in any way. it is obviously disgusting for a white character to replace a latina girl. however, terra being a new character is a lie. flora was whitewashed into terra
first, here is terra's acting portfolio in fate the winx saga. she is stated to be playing flora. there's absolutely no sign of terra here. this means that she was casted as flora and netflix later changed flora's name to avoid backlash. but wait, i have more proof of this
when netflix announced the casting auditions and that they were looking for actors to play in fate the winx saga, they clearly specified that they were looking for an actress to play flora. not terra. terra was not a thing long after the script had been completed
and here's an audition tape for a fate character where he claims being with flora in that specific scene. not terra. flora was part of the script and terra wasn't. eliot salt was cast as flora but netflix changed her name to avoid whitewashing backlash
there was a rumour circulating around that claimed musa's actress to be part singaporean that rumour is false. elisha is purely caucasian as told by her bio ethnicity; slav, eastern european, hispanic, white skinned mediterranean, middle eastern etc
the fact that netflix hired two WHITE women to play the role of two characters of color is absolutely disgusting and disrespectful. they took away a perfect opportunity of representation for latino and asian people. winx club cherished diversity-
whitewashing two of its main characters is the worst kind of vile. and the fact that iginio straffi, the creator of winx club himself, is involved in the production of this series is horrible. shame on iginio and shame on all the people who are associated to this
without having been released yet, fate already has some fans and let me tell you some of these 'fans' are toxic and racist. they do not give a damn about the whitewashing of this series and will even defend it
'if eliot is a new character, i will love it and if she's flora, i will love it even more'

they don't care about a latina character being whitewashed and they completely disrespect the original series
'this is not a remake, some characters are added some are removed... who knows if straffi wanted an asian musa'

is there even need for me to tell me how racist this sounds? musa is ASIAN. if you're including her in the live action adaptation, RESPECT her ethnicity wtf and why-
is it only the POC characters being whitewashed? why didn't the producers replace a white character? it's only two of the non white girl being disrespected
it goes as far as big fate accs tweeting things like this to frame us who are rightfully upset about the whitewashing of flora and musa. we aren't upset about eliot being plus sized. those who attack her for it are the toxic people and trolls in the fandom-
i do not condone bodyshaming and certainly not hating on the actresses. it's not their fault. we are upset about flora being replaced by a white character not because eliot is plus sized. they could've cast a plus sized latina and i wouldn't have bat an eyelash
when someone brings up a valid and respectful argument about why we are upset, some fate stans attack us. this person here literally didn't disrespect the actress but had people in his mention harassing him. please, do better and be mature
netflix and the producers of fate have to be called out for this. we pocs barely get representation. why would they hire two white actresses to play the role of non-white characters? why did they feel like this would be a good idea. i am beyond shocked
i still can't believe the creator of winx club himself is part of the production and approving of this. here he claims fate will be the right adaptation and will make loyal fans happy. by whitewashing two of our favorite characters? shame on you iginio
