What the #data says about #diversity in #postproduction, and how we can make a meaningful change. A thread:
According to the 2019 @BCPCollective #ratesurvey, the average hourly rate for PoC in post is $34.40 vs $43.21 for white folks. That’s a pay gap of just over 20%.

Pay gaps however, are always more complex than that. A lot of facilities and productions have PoC on the team, but they are more likely to be in lower-paid roles. In particular, “service” roles rather than technical or artist positions.

PoC are 50% more likely to start out at reception, client services or facilities management than any artist assistant role, machine room, vault or dailies.
White coordinators and Post PAs avg $25.18 while PoC avg $22.39. That’s a pay gap of 11%.

PoC are more likely to be in lower-level roles than their white colleagues. This is the biggest factor contributing to the pay gap. As you can see, the pay gap comparing folks in the same role is less than the overall racial pay gap.

36% of PAs and coordinators are PoC, while 17% move up to Producer roles.
26% of PoC work in artist assist roles (AE, dailies, Color Assist) while again, 17% move up to to what we would call “professions”, editor, colorist, mixer, artist.

This shows that PoC in #postproduction are more likely to be in “service” rather than “technical” or “artist” roles. Most often not by preference, but by opportunity. PoC are not only #underrepresented in post, but more likely to be in lower level roles on our teams.

It’s not enough to hire PoC. We’re doing that, but we aren’t giving them the opportunity to thrive. We aren’t offering PoC the same career paths, that lead to higher paying positions on the team. We aren’t promoting PoC at the same rate as white folks to higher positions.

Look at your team.
Look at where people are.
The roots of white supremacy and #patriarchy run deep.
But by acknowledging and seeing it, we can start to change it.
