heaps of ppl on my tl are watching the Sleuth of Ming Dynasty and i just wanted to flag something, as a han chinese person (1/?)
(2) DISCLAIMER : i’m not an authority on this for many reasons - i’m han, i’m hakka, i grew up w govt pr *p ag* *n da, i’ve lived overseas since young, i’m concerned for my safety - but i haven’t seen anyone flag this so, here we go (takes my shirt off and screams)
(i’m going to try avoid certain key words too bc im a bit nervous about the panopticon catching me)
(3) PLEASE be critical and aware of how the Oirat people are portrayed in this, and think of how this country handles cultural diversity.
e.g i’ve only watched 2 eps but the way they’re described is very reminiscent of how the “civilised west” describes the “barbaric east”.

(4) they are very obviously the “exotic” group in this show. how is that shown, and who is showing you? do you think a group of han ppl can do this justice? or were they probably just relying on stereotypes and caricatures?
(5) or worse, could this be step 1 of selling you the idea that any ethnic group who lives here are actually just Han+™ so it wouldn’t be too big of a deal if they died out? we can make their clothes. pretend to be them. we already own EVERYTHING ELSE. why not?
(6) this has already happened to many cultures.
i speak hakka, and our people are commonly called “the root of han china”, despite there being evidence that we were a small group from Northern China that continuously migrated south to avoid persecution.

(7) my grandma, who had never gone to a day of school, was forced to go to a “literacy” class (literally called “sweeping for illiterates” in mandarin) to learn mandarin and write chinese.
hakka means “guest family” - historically, we could only be guests, to avoid persecution

(8) the narrative that our govt likes to perpetuate now is that hakka people are welcoming and LOVE guests, as we are the Han owners of the land. they said this while making caricatures of us in media and banning our language from classrooms and textbooks.
(9) the oirats are a historical ethnic group, so with what limited research i could do, Oirat ppl in current times seem to be dispersed among X*nj **ng and Q* ngh **. ethnic groups who live here are NOT treated well.
(10) please at least read this. and CHASE IT UP W YOUR OWN RESEARCH. talk about it. listen to and amplify Uyghur voices. incite revolution

sorry i’m light on sources. stuff like this is hard to find, obviously/mostly in chinese. if you can read chinese, here’s something on the origin of hakka ppl https://zhuanlan.zhihu.com/p/137132179
