I don’t talk about this a lot...

But I’m diagnosed with MDD.

Major Depressive Disorder

Most commonly just called “depression.”

I’ve had it since at least 13. (I’m 25)

A lot of people have no idea

Because I refuse to let it control my life.
& actually

Dealing with it has taught me a lot.

So, here we go.

My 1st thread.

Hope you’re ready to get real

3 LESSONS I LEARNED FROM DEPRESSION 👇🏻
1. The Power of Hope

I’ve contemplated killing myself many times.

Once I almost followed through.

I get it—that’s shocking and disturbing.

But I’m telling you that for a reason;

I want you to see the contrast.
I am by no means perfect.

I still struggle with my mental health some days

I’m working on my overall health too.

But I am not the same person I was 8 months ago.

What changed?

I found hope.

John Maxwell said it well:

“If there is hope in the future,
There is power in the present.”

Now, I want to be clear—

I’m not peddling some re-worked “things will get better” BS.

That’s not always true.

At least not automatically

Things don’t get better for everyone

But things almost always get better for those who find hope
& then make the determined decision to MAKE things better.

I found hope in knowing others had dealt with the same things I do

& they were able to be the victor.

Once I knew victory was a possibility

My soul was revitalized.

My passion that had died out was rekindled.
My FIRE began to burn anew.

That is the power of hope.

I knew I wanted change.

I wanted to enjoy my life again.

But even though I found hope

My depression didn’t just go away.

Which leads me to my next point... 👇🏻
2. Don’t let your FEELINGS control you

Most of society is led by feelings.

They don’t realize this.

But subconsciously, the way they “feel” is leading all their decisions.

Problem is

Feelings are not reality.

& worse than that

Feelings are quite often lies:
- “I NEED a cigarette” & they smoke themselves to death
- “I’m really in the mood for a burger” & they eat crap
- “I don’t really FEEL like going to the gym today” & their body deteriorates
- “I WANT this SO bad!” & they go into debt to buy something they don’t need
Their actions follow their feelings.

Depression means that some mornings

I wake up with little to no will power.

I have no drive

I don’t want to do anything.

That’s how I FEEL

But that’s not that I do.

- I get up
- Brush my teeth
- Go to work

You get the idea.
I DO what I need to do

Regardless of the way I feel.

How?

👇🏻

3. Discipline

Now, I want to be clear here

I see lots of talk about this

On Money Twitter

& the self-development niche in general

- “Be more disciplined”
- “Discipline is power”
- “Discipline > will power”
All true, but...

As long as discipline is just a word

It will not benefit you.

We need to be clear about what we mean

Because discipline is not something you have

It’s something you do.

Wishing you were more disciplined is a waste of time

It’s not an inherent trait.
It’s a learned skill.

So practically speaking

What does discipline look like?

Habits.

Disciplined people create habits.

- Set your intention
- Identify the necessary steps
- Build habits around these steps

It’s as simple as that.
If you’re trying to bring change into your life

You need new habits.

I have a routine I keep every morning

- Drink water
- Meditate
- Journal
- Set my intention for the day
- Plan day accordingly

Every day.

Good days, bad days, okay days

Days I wake up energized
Days I wake up a zombie

The way I feel is irrelevant.

These are the habits I’ve built.

& they have sustained me.

I don’t “have” discipline.

I practice it.

It has freed me from slavery to my feelings.

Discipline, practiced via habits

It will free you in the same way
So that’s it.

These are a few of the lessons I’ve learned so far

Many more coming, I’m sure ...

But that’s it for now.

You know the drill. 😉
