It's St Ignatius's feast day. He's such a weirdly fascinating guy to me. He murdered people because of their faith, drank too much, and lived an all around sinners life, before turning into a pretty strict man of god type. and the jesuits have been equally all over the place
they committed horrendous acts during the inquisition to subjugate women, the poor and anyone else who challenged their authority and the authority of the crown, went and committed perhaps the greatest act of genocide in human history
and over the last 100 years have become one of the most stalwart defenders of the poor and oppressed. thousands of them and their associated brethren (like the oblates of st francis desales) putting their literal lives on the line routinely for the least among us
they remain on the bleeding edge of social justice reform of the church. and unlike most in the church, they have been a lot more open and forthcoming about the depths of their historic depravity and crimes.
this is all obvs super TLDR. and i'm not really here to teach or debate theology or church history. but he and his order are worth learning about for anyone trying to figure out the dos and do nots of how we as a society navigate the mess we're in.
