We can make this happen - if we focus on making sure we have taken care of the details.
The missteps that MOE made was to make a sudden change in Phase 2, the lack of explanation, and inserting the cohort model masking it as a change in educational philosophy. #bced 2/
2/This just threw too much complexity into the situation.

We need details in some areas, we need clarification in others, and we need simplicity in some.
3/
3/The science.

It is not a matter of disagreeing with the science - it is a matter of the many discrepancies that exist between what is planned to be happening at school and what is currently the reality in the community. 4/
4/There are disconnects re size of groups, bubbles, and numbers of contacts. If people are asked to take risks in schools above what is expected in society just say that. If it is just a lack of understanding that is creating the inability of people to connect, explain that.5/
5/As new studies come out providing more information especially about youth transmission explain why these are not good studies. There needs to be a more concerted effort in explanation. This goes also for explaining why some jurisdictions are implementing something different.
6/In school structure

This is not the time to be implementing or even hinting at implementing a new way of teaching. We are in the midst of a pandemic. Keep it simple and allow school structures to maintain as much as they have while making the change to fit the current need.
7
7/If a structure is needed for contact tracing say that - don’t try to wrap it up pretty in a thought about a new way of approaching teaching. Talk to people who work in schools - more importantly listen to people who work in schools, as well as parents in the community... 8/
8/and create a structure that works with as minimal changes as possible right now.
9/
9/Consistency

This is critical as everyone is highly anxious. Stay as consistent as possible and clearly explain the reasoning behind any changes.
10/
10/Funding

While the added $46m is appreciated there are greater needs that are either a result of the pandemic or years of neglect (or both). An investment is needed now to make things as safe for workers and families as possible.
11/
11/Equitable Access

Make sure that every parent, student, and worker is provided access to the public education system that meets their physical and mental health, emotional, and families needs. 12/
12/ This may mean providing off site access to work or learning, special structures within the school, special technology or other accommodations. Make sure these are provided. 13/
13/Time

Time is the critical piece here. School staff need time to create, implement and get trained in the protocols that are being developed. Provide this time. Don’t expect people to give up their summer holidays or provide volunteer work to get the job done. 14/
14/Allow time for staff to implement what is required to keep everyone safe. Time allows for everything to settle. Provide this time and, as has been seen historically, those involved will provide even more time of their own if they feel respected. 15/
15/We live in very uncertain times.

Everyone just wants to know they are being kept as safe as possible.

We can lessen anxiety and continue to be the model for other jurisdictions if we consider these areas and are good and honest with each other.
16/
16/We really can do this together - if we are respectful of the needs and worries of each other.
