Today Jim Prosser retires from an active career. Thread.
His work is well known but just wanted to highlight some of his achievements with help from @graemepaton007. It was a pleasure to be working alongside him @UoABioSci albeit for a short duration.

He's a great mentor. He supervised over 60 PhD students and continues to inspire. I first heard him give a birds-eye-view talk at ISME meeting and still remember that address. https://scholar.google.co.uk/citations?user=9hxQk5QAAAAJ&hl=en
He is most proud of providing an explanation for nitrification in acid soils & discovery of obligate acidophilic growth by a group of archaeal ammonia oxidisers that are distributed globally in acid soils.

Some of his perspectives on ecological theory in microbial ecology are quite popular: https://www.nature.com/articles/nrmicro1643
The most recent is in a theme issue on 'conceptual challenges in microbial community ecology' https://royalsocietypublishing.org/doi/full/10.1098/rstb.2019.0241

Jim started @aberdeenuni as a Lecturer in September 1978. He was 1st in family to go to uni & claims to be a beneficiary of grammar schools policy to ‘exploit the potential’ of working class by educating them.
His favourite destination is Berkeley.
Wishing him all the best.
