Thread: @jacobinmag & now @ProgIntl have published my work without permission. I told Jacobin not to republish my work, months ago, and have warned Andronico personally about the aggressively anti-Evo pieces they normally publish
In May, Jacobin went as far as publishing my interview with Luis Arce for @KawsachunCoca, without my knowledge, as if it was their own. Thereby erasing our work as a struggling outlet reporting in the face of constant threats from the state. They eventually agreed to remove it.
Progressive International has reached out to me numerous times, inviting me to join. I've ignored them because it seems like the same crowd of people. Though, I'm happy to be shown otherwise.
Why don't I want to be associated with Jacobin? Before the coup, they consistently attacked Bolivia's MAS, the party of the social movements. They were the most high profile forum for bogus 'left' critiques of Evo and all of Latin Americas left.
The effect of these attacks is to break down international solidarity, thereby strengthening the position of the US State Department. Indeed, I've had to go to great lengths to debunk some of the misconceptions about Bolivia that they've spread.
We take huge risks for what we do. We also do our work in desperate economic conditions. To put it in context, a minimum wage worker in the UK/US is very wealthy compared to us. It's not fair to use that sacrifice to rake in clicks for something that has greatly harmed our cause.
This isn't a personal grudge against Jacobin or those involved, some of whom I admire. Especially @tribunemagazine an institution of the Corbyn left, they've always supported Latin America. Sadly, Jacobin doesn't share those politics, they continue to join US attacks on the left.
Anyway, I've tried to avoid undignified twitter spats, but I do feel that Jacobin has been incredibly disrespectful towards me and my work. For a long time. I'm happy to work with any outlet, but the relationship has to be based on mutual respect.
I should add. I'm happy and honoured to have my work republished anywhere, without prior permission. The difference here is that I specifically told Jacobin (3 different people at the outlet) that I don't wish to appear on their website. They accepted that, then publish anyway.
