NEW: Schools in NYC will only reopen IF the city can maintain a test positivity rate below 3 percent, de Blasio just announced. We are currently hovering between 1-2 percent.
We've got a long way to go between now and the first day of school on Sept. 10.
This is really important. Cuomo has said schools cant reopen if the test positivity rate is under 5 percent - that's a threshold set by public health experts.

In NYC, we have been under 3 percent since June 10. But if the numbers tick up, we can get to 3 percent very fast.
More new details today:
School staff will have a 24 hour turnaround time for test results. All staff asked to get a test before school starts, and monthly after that.
The 3% threshold for reopening schools in NYC means it really matters how NYers act for the next 6 weeks.
If the city can keep our rates as low as they've been since June, kids will likely be able to see the inside of a classroom again in September. The stakes are so high.
De Blasio addresses calls to have school outside - said he will work with some schools to set this up, but the fact of NYC weather makes it too unpredictable to be a solution for the entire system.
