@jamesfarrar on why he sued #Uber. "Uber presented data about me to a tribunal without consulting me. I did not have access to this data and could not challenge it. Uber was spinning the data to suggest I did not deserve minimum wage, although I was on their productivity scale."
@jamesfarrar finally managed to get his hands on this data and won the case, but adds, "If we were to start today, this would be a tougher battle. Uber has gotten much better at concealing managerial control of the algorithm."
Uber’s consistently refuses to grant access to #collectivedata because they see this as competitive advantage, not just against competitors, but also workers & govts. Reclaiming this data creates an opportunity to regulate & change how Uber operates @michelleimiller @teamcoworker
The contractual/independent workers category is a clear manifestation of how we have allowed market risks to be shifted to individual workers while stripping them of social protection, @CjColclough
We need to be cognizant of the 'economic value distribution' question wrt #data - how can a collective of workers organise and work differently in the data age, Anita Gurumurthy @ITforChange
Workers in global south attempted to go platform and embrace #datamaximalism. This goes against the cooperative, anti-capitalist movement. They adopted the same predatory principles that prevent small players from entering, rebuilding the mirror we are fighting, Anita Gurumurthy
Solution is not data annihilation. Data minimalism might work for artisans, selling art to connoisseurs. Need to move towards data collectivism - this is central when we talk about workers in the global south, Anita Gurumurthy @ITforChange
#POSTCOVID19 economies are plummeting. We need regeneration. We need to stop mimicking the mainstream economy and use data for a different purpose, Anita Gurumurthy @ITforChange
@jamesfarrar emphasises that the issue is not just about privacy, but PROTECTION of data and protection of people from the use of that data. How our personal data is being used, how we’re being managed - these are the key questions to think about.
The good thing about data is that with the same data that is out there, we can create social and public value. To have mandatory data sharing for city transportation involves Uber giving data away for public value, Anita Gurumurthy @ITforChange
On breaking up #BigTech: Look at data value chains & prevent cos from existing across all segments in that value chain. You can't be in cloud & analytics & in the marketplace. Breaking up Big Tech not only in terms of mkt valuation, but also data logic: Anita Gurumurthy
