A brand is not a logo.
What’s a logo?
A logo is a symbol or graphic device for a brand.
A trademark if you will.
It’s not the brand itself.

A brand is not a corporate identity system.
What’s a corporate identity system?
It’s a 'rule book' to control how logos, symbols, emblems, images and text should appear. Sizes, colours, spacing
Whether product, packaging, signage, furniture, advertisements, stationery...

Think of the golden arches.
Everyone of them the same.
Consistent.

A brand is not a product.
People chat about managing their brands.
They actually mean managing their sales, distribution and quality of their products or service.
They are also managing a feeling, an aura, a layer of meaning that’s invisible too.

So what the hell is a brand then?
It’s actually a person’s gut feeling about a product, service or a company.
A gut feeling.
Despite our best attempts to be rational, human beings are intuitive and emotional.

At the end of the day, a brand is defined by individual’s and not by the company, the markets or the general public.
It’s down to an individual’s gut feeling.

If enough of these individual’s arrive at the same gut feeling.
That’s when a company can be said to have a brand.
Whilst companies can’t control this process, they can influence it.
By communicating the qualities that make product A different to product B.

A brand is an approximate - yet distinct - understanding of a product, service or a company.
To compare a brand with its competitors, we only need to know what makes it different.
Brand management is a management of differences as they exist in the people’s minds.

So, when thinking of your product, company or service. How can you be different.
Think of every single touch point a customer can have with you.
Website, tone of voice, customer service, packaging, emails, social media, delivery, quality, price, offers etc

It’s what THEY say it is.
