His father's name was Sardar Tehl Singh (known as Chuhar Singh before taking Amrit). He belonged to Jammu clan of Kamboj lineage.

Sher Singh's mother passed away when he was 2 years old in 1901, his father passed away in 1907.
With the help of Bhai Kisham Singh Ragi, Sher Singh and brother Mukta Singh were taken to Central Khalsa Orphanage (CKO) in Amritsar in 1907.

The young Udham Singh survived this massacre and was witness to this atrocities of British on Indians.
Jallianwala Bagh occured during the tenure of Michael O'Dwyer as he was Lieutenant Governor of Punjab.

Udham Singh was very fond of Ram Prasad Bismil who was a leading poet of the revolutionaries.
He joined the Gadar Party overseas in 1924. Gadar Party was formed on 12th April 1913 with Indian group of Revolutionaries in USA, Canada etc with its legendary member Hardyal.

Udham Singh returned in July 1927 along with other associates and revolvers & ammunitions.
But he was arrested and jailed for 5 years till 1931.
After his release, he went back to his native Sunam but faced harassment from local police.
Hence he returned to Amritsar.

He somehow escaped and reached England in 1934.

At last, the opportunity came on 13 March 1940, almost 21 years after the Jallianwala Bagh killings.

At 4:30 pm in Caxton Hall, Udham Singh fired 5-6 shots from his pistol at Michael O'Dwyer and avenged the Jallianwala Bagh atrocities on Indians.

On 1st. April 1940, he was first charged with murder of O'Dwyer. On 4th June he was commited to trial before Justice Atkinson who sentenced him to death.
