So everyone in Congress seems to agree: the election will be held November 3. Maybe next Congress can make sure states and locals have the resources they need to ensure they are fair, safe and secure from cyberattack? https://slate.com/technology/2020/07/congress-election-security-2020.html
Here are three lessons from this spring's primaries:
1. we must widely deploy resiliency measures for on-line tools for things like voter registration and mail ballot requests. These tools are being used like never before, there must be a backup plan if they go down.
2. we must be prepared for polling place equipment to fail, and be ready to provide voters with a way to vote while that equipment is replaced or repaired. We must take all necessary steps to avoid the 5, 6, 7 hour lines we saw in Georgia this year.
3. Finally, there needs to be a plan for mail ballot processing and postal service breakdowns. Widely distributed, secure drop boxes where people can leave their mail ballots are critical.
These things cost money! Senate Rs are proposing zero extra support for local jurisdictions to run elections this fall. All those Senators yesterday who insisted our elections will be held on November 3 (and they will!) need to step up and make sure the elections are fully funded
