We in the 'underground' must create a culture where Spotify engagement is seen in the same way as when someone clearly buys bot engagement: indicative of not very much at all.

Create a culture where there is no feeling of self sabotage for not uploading to streaming sites
I've made a conscious decision to not upload my EPs this year to streaming sites such as Spotify until at least a year after their release. Soundcloud and bandcamp only and even with the most recent EP only one song to soundcloud.
It has helped but there is only so much individual action undertaken by individual artists can do... I will probably even have to up my next 'major' project to streaming to avoid this feeling of self sabatoge
I feel like Spotify has normalized itself and become ubiquitous in different sectors through different means. There was no need for it to become such a large part of underground diy music.
Back on the idea that there can only be so much an individual can do... I wish large independent labels resisted Spotify more and I wish the publications which typically cover that music resisted too. More so in the case of publications cos I feel one led to the other
It's really weird to see all these thinkpieces published about Spotify on places that absolutely encourage its use. The excuse now is that it is unavoidable but looking from a few years back it felt almost like there was incentives offered to encourage this shift to Spotify...
I can't otherwise explain this shift that felt as if it came from absolute thin air. And for what? So that this behemoth could monopolise a section that barely adds to its financials but massively drains the ability for this section of the music world to be fairly compensated
