An assistant of a Taiwanese legislator said she has been contacting different political parties in #Taiwan to raise the case of Tony Chung, as she believed Chung would likely be targeted by the #HongKong government. However, no party responded to her requests positively.
Chung first visited #Taiwan last August, when the anti-extradition bill protest were about to intensify. Chung did ask about what might be the possible way for #HK people to seek asylum in #Taiwan. He insisted to be the last among his group of friends to be in Taiwan.
He worried that if he had come to #Taiwan first, the route to seek refuge in Taiwan could potentially be cancelled by the #HongKong government. He wanted to maintain a safe passage for other people in #HK to be able to seek refuge in Taiwan in case they need to.
After the #COVID19 pandemic began, young people in #HongKong could no longer flee to #Taiwan as only those with family ties, the need to fulfill business appointments, study or conduct investment immigration can come.
The assistant of the legislator questioned the coordination between #Taiwan's immigration bureau and the Mainland Affairs Council, which runs the " #HongKong Humanitarian Assistance Project."
"There lacks real coordination between the MAC and the Immigration Bureau. There is still no basis for seeking political asylum in #Taiwan, so how do they define who might be facing 'immediate danger?' If only those with family ties or business appointments can come ...
... to #Taiwan, why do we still need this office?"
Tony Chung reportedly asked his lawyer whether there is a need for him to leave #HongKong before he appeared in court on July 21. His lawyer told him he needs to do that, so he started planning to leave #HK. #Taiwan was his last hope.
His friend reportedly urged him to call the " #HongKong Humanitarian Assistance Project" but the staff at the office in #HongKong told him to call staff at the #Taiwan office. Staff at the #Taiwan office told him that due to the pandemic, he couldn't come to Taiwan now.
However, #Taiwan's Mainland Affairs Council told @RFA_Chinese that they didn't receive any request to seek asylum from Tony Chung and they also said that Tony Chung didn't call the office. The MAC said so far the office has received more than 1000 calls and most are related ...
... to studying, seeking employment or investment immigration in #Taiwan.
