With respect @MattHancock the timing, the platform, the lack of understanding of local communities, the inconsistency & seemingly contradictory rules re latest #lockdown is eroding faith & trust in government. https://twitter.com/MattHancock/status/1288931858856710150
The latest #lockdown targets areas with high BME and #Muslim populations. The announcement was rushed out on the night many muslims deem equivalent to #ChristmasEve. While many were celebrating #chandraat at family homes.
Many families travel far and wide to share #EidAladha2020 with loved ones. People will have booked time off work, made travel arrangements, planned their day to pray together, cook large amounts of food, wear new clothes & give presents.
Celebrations were already muted but people wanted to share something positive and joyful with their families. While still using common-sense and being safe. But this latest lockdown is eroding trust and anger is building. I hope people remain clear headed.
This could have been handled better & differently. Religious faith is a strange and at times beautiful thing. But blind faith has it’s dark edges. Effective clear planning & communication should build community cohesion not weaken it.
I pray calm heads prevail for this latest lockdown has enflamed controversial theories. It is also entrenching communities already steeped in poverty, poor job opportunities, unequal treatment of women & minorities, generational divides etc
Anyway wishing all who are celebrating #EidMubarak Do so safely and in good faith InshahAllah.
Thinking of those who are alone far and wide. May you have sukoon.
