1/ Defeatism has crept into our approach to #covid19aus. Time and time again, we face challenges that seem insurmountable.
But when shown examples of other countries which have found novel solutions, we hear that familiar, knee-jerk response: 'that won't work here'.
2/ The barriers we perceive to these solutions are economic, social, bureaucratic, social, legal etc. But often they are also illusory. For example, In March there was immense skepticism about Australians' adherence to lockdowns, yet we did very well.
3/ #Masks were another 'that'll never happen here' concept which, while it's early days, has been taken up in Melbourne with minimal fuss. There are several other examples I could state. Now we face 2 enormous challenges: Contact tracing, & transmission of #covid in healthcare.
4/ Re: transmission of #covid in healthcare settings, this is something several countries have addressed. It isn't just about PPE (where we've dropped the ball, picked it up, but continue to fumble). Take China for example: https://twitter.com/ketaminh/status/1289084600472363008?s=20
5/ I've picked this fairly example not because I think this is what we need right now, but because the first reaction I've heard from several colleagues has been 'that wouldn't work here'.
But you know what else isn't working?
What we've done for the last 3 weeks.
6/ Much of our approach to #covid19aus will need to be tried and true, scientific approaches that have served us well in the past. But as a philosopher once said:
7/ This might mean attempting approaches that are unfamiliar to us domestically. But that doesn't' mean they haven't been proven abroad. Looking at the successes of other nations, we can piece together our own blueprint of success.
8/ The 'acceptability' of solutions is important to gauge.
But it is not a constant value. It is dynamic.
As #covid19aus continues to touch more lives, it will change our willingness to adapt.
All solutions must remain on the table.
