What will #remotework at Unicorns look like in 2021?

Few thoughts 🧵⬇️ 1/
2/ Unicorns will have 3 choices:

- "We're now remote-first!" ( @Twitter, @shopify, @square, @slack...)
- "Remote is a pain, can't wait for the office..." ( @Microsoft, @Google, @amazon...)
- "We're kind of remote but we don't like it." ( @facebook)
3/ Logistics:

- Unicorn Offices will become Hubs for trainings / team gatherings. Huge real estate costs are still being depreciated.

- Unicorn Salaries will be adjusted (down) to locations. That's how F500 does business. Paying everyone "SF top dollar" is a Twitter fantasy.
4/ Will Unicorns master remote work?

Check how many C-levels will be 100% remote.

If less than 50% of executives are remote, it's not a remote team. Employees are just being outsourced.

Brace for 2021 top tech question: "Can I still get promoted if I'm remote?"
5/ Unicorn remote hiring:

- Junior talent crave on-site interactions (campus life, social encounters & mentoring...)
- Senior talent crave remote work (flexibility, independence...)
- SF senior tech talent pool will dramatically decrease within 3 yrs.
5/ Unicorn talent migration:

- Aliens: Green cards won't hypnotize foreign talent any more. Capital can be raised remotely, Stripe Atlas incorporates you & work can be done anywhere.

- US Citizens: $500k in SF buys you a closet. Same $ get you a mansion anywhere. Bye, SF!
6/ Unicorn talent migration:

- Remote isn't for everyone. Some people can't wait to go back to the office. Most people want an hybrid model, few people want full-remote.
- Remote startups are seeing crazy numbers of applicants, it will continue to rise.
