Thread : Stuart Broad just entered the 500 wicket club, and that is as monumental an achievement for any bowler, more so for a pacer. 500 wickets is a testimony to his longevity. However, in the past week I have read a number of pieces putting him in the league of legends...
He's been an asset. But longevity shouldn't always be associated with supreme performances. Here I take a analytical look at his performances-overall, home and away
in comparison to Top 10 wicket takers-Pacers
1) Strike Rate and Average(Overall)
Steyn, McGrath, and an extremely underrated Ambrose lead the pack. Broad sits far away from the bunch, and as a matter of fact, so does Anderson.
2) Strike Rate and Average(Away)
The gap is even wider here. Gets worse for Broad and Anderson. Steyn phenomenally has a <45 SR even overseas. Stuff of legends.
Also striking is the imbalance between Hadlee and Dev, two members of the famous quartet along with Khan and Botham.
3) Strike Rate difference(%) home and Away
This is where it starts to fall apart for the Englishmen. Shockingly they have a 35, 37% increase in their SRs overseas despite the fact their home numbers aren't extraordinary.
McGrath, Hadlee, Ambrose, Walsh way superior.
Steyn in a league of his own.

4) Average Diff (%) home and away
Shocking numbers there again for Broad and especially Anderson(40%!). The numbers are nothing short of appaling.
Conclusions:
1)At home, Broad and Anderson have been good, but others have been better too.
2)They fall short massively in away performances, a key metric to judge the true quality of a test player. Not just average numbers, these are ridiculously bad away numbers.
3) Picking up 590 wickets and 500 wickets+ isn't a joke. But let's not forget they have played on pacer friendly wickets for a very long time and have played just one format in the last 5 years. Also, no real intense competition.
Finn, Tremlet faded away.
Woakes miserable away.
4) The arguement that their stats would have weakened over the last few years with age is flawed as these last few years is why they are even considered in the greatest list. Those extra wickets. Somebody had to bowl for England afterall right?
5) Unpopular opinion but got to say it because numbers back it up: Anderson and Broad should not be considered in G.O.A.T comparisons. Period.
Glenn McGrath is the best fast bowler.
Dale Steyn, a close second, finest of the last 15 years .
Curtly Ambrose, underrated legend.
End.
