Working with a Japanese professor these days. He is not much proficient in English but that didn't stop him from becoming the best in his field. Learning first in mother tongue (in grades 1−4) improves mathematics scores later (in grade 5) by 0.159 standard deviations, suggesting students taught first in their mother tongue learn in English better after they switch to English-instruction classrooms (Yared Seid, 2019).
Evidence in the 2017/8 GEM Report shows that 69% of adults with five years of schooling in education systems privileging indigenous languages could read an entire sentence, compared to 41% in colonial or mixed language systems – a gap of 28 percentage points. (Sub-Saharan Africa)
