Subaru is his own person and doesn’t adhere to the wishes of the reader’s fantasy - that’s the message. In episode 18 he tells Rem that people only focus on the negative things he’s done and not the positive - that’s partially directed towards the readers
He was honest with Rem and stayed true to his feelings but no one appreciates that because “he didn’t pick the girl *I* like” or they claim it doesn’t make sense when it’s well known how illogical love is (not to mention the fact that there are pretty clear reasons)
It’s funny how some of those who won’t accept that Subaru chose Emilia are acting just as he did in episode 13.
Subaru is most certainly NOT a self-insert but he is a damn relatable and expertly crafted character.
Though it’s odd that anyone would want to go through all that suffering just so they could have a harem, so I’m not sure how people thought that to begin with

Instead of him ‘choosing the harem route’ or having the ‘luxury’ to choose one of the girls, he has to make a heartbreaking decision as they are real people and not bland objectified women that wouldn’t mind being in a polygamous relationship (like in other escapist fantasies)
