Im not sure if this meme is pro marxism (since marx was a materialist) or anti (since marxism didnt work out in material reality) but i think its a good springboard to talk about how the idealism/materialism divide of plato and Aristotle can’t be reconciled separate frm eachother
Marxist philosophy was consciously materialist, but it was grown out of hegel, which kept a very platonic Idealist duality That is continued in outgrowths of marxism.
Libertarianism often consider an opposite of marxism, and libertarians, “classic” liberals, and to some extent civic nationalists pride themselves on very Aristotelian concepts of science, yet there moral community is completely platonic, based on an ideal not material (blood)
More racially conscious rightwingers emphasize a more materially conscious community, although to varying degrees. “Amnats” still keep a idealist moral community (christianity) even if the community would be better among ethnically similar people
“Wignats” are much more materialistic in their moral community. Not just ethnically conscious but prioritizing ethnicity. But despite a more Aristotelian approach, some dislike the enlightenment and liberal (broadly) concepts that grew out of Aristotle
Every group deals with the conflict if material and ideal because it’s unavoidable. And western civilization has always included this conflict because both are part of western civilization
Everyone has to both reconcile a basis for morals and live in a material reality. You can’t get morals from material alone. Facts don’t care about your feelings. There must be some sort of ideal there. You cant scientifically prove a value
But the values you have must be able to be manifested in material reality. You might want something to be a certain way, and thing it is against your values otherwise, but sometimes reality doesnt line up the way you want. And you end up making things worse
Sometimes the patterns you see behind things are real but they aren’t the whole story, and an unknown variable knocks you on your ass.
I firmly believe that reconciling idealism with materialism is one of the biggest challenges we have right now. Many conflicts between factions are often manifestations of this conflict
Or maybe im being overly idealistic and I’m missing another variable that is distorting my pattern perception
