I was by far the most applied student in my stat department \\pm 5 years before and after. I had been taking classes outside my dept except the last semester when I REALLY had to write. 1/2 or 3 https://twitter.com/rlbarter/status/1288998033321934848
I published papers in other disciplines based on my work at @UNCPopCenter but not the dissertation theory. I wish I could say I turned out OK and made it alright - the academic department where I started tenure track kicked me out after the third year (forget giving me 6 years).
I was unemployed for 1.5 yrs, then worked as a part time Stata programmer (applied!!), and then finally found a job as a survey statistician, having brushed up that knowledge I gained outside the home department through @Odum_Institute - again, quite applied. 3/4 or more
At the PhD program, the support for applied stuff was between lukewarm and half-enthusiastic; at least I was allowed to take outside courses which many grad program forbid. Also being next to @SAMSI_Info helped.
I can talk more on academia vs industry... but who’s interested?..
You can follow @StatStas.
