What's a band or group that was huge in the town or region where you grew up but barely known outside it?
In Santa Cruz where I went to school, The Call were beloved and many of us felt that deserved to be the next U2, but are really only known by most people for the sweaty saxophone guy covering their song "I Still Believe" in The Lost Boys.
When I was a kid in the Bay Area, the Looters (not the Hooters!) was a beloved band that was one of the first to fuse world music elements into rock. But neither they nor their genre, "world beat" ever became the huge deal we thought they would be.
Voice Farm was one of my favorite live bands of all time in the 80s & 90s, but literally no one outside Bay Area Gen Xers have even heard of them:
