this is such a deeply cynical and sad way to think about music and making music, and it hurts my heart
the reason I love music, the reason I love making music, is because it carries so much. it can be a means of direct communication between artist and listener. it can travel between artists, via remixes and reworks or referential themes.
it has history, it is part of culture. it is about the movement of the body and the way it responds to sound. it’s tied to dance and fashion and film and literature. it’s about the joy of songwriting, and what it feels like to make noise with yr friends.
music contains worlds. to distill it to flat consumer product, wallpaper background, is to pull out everything that makes it toothsome and relevant and important. husk music. dead music.
