Here are my learnings and tips for anyone wanting to secure positive media coverage for their own research while working from home during #covid. Let's get more science stories out there to promote #STEM and the next generation! #scicomm A thread:
/9 Prerecord interviews of your spokespeople while maintaining physical distancing, in case media outlets cannot come to you on the day. Promote diversity. Upload these to a folder in your cloud service of choice.
/9 Film videos and take quality images of your critters, subject, field site and staff working to support your story. Put these in the cloud folder. The media will use this as overlay/B-roll.
/9 Write a short and snappy media release, providing quotes from your spokespeople to promote your work. Think about key messaging. Put the media release document in the cloud folder.
/9 Get your social media posts ready for release day. Think about visuals. Use sites like http://giphy.com to create fun gifs. Don't forget to hashtag and tag relevant accounts! (

/9 Pitch your story to media contacts in an email (you can find their contact details on Google), including the elevator pitch and link to the cloud folder with your videos and images. Offer to provide follow up interviews (can provide your Skype/Zoom account details). Be brave!
/9 You're probably going to start your big media day with morning breakfast radio! Keep water on hand and take some deep breaths because you've got this! Write down 3 key messages you can always go back to if you stumble. You can always have a copy of the media release on hand.
/9 Engage on social media throughout the day and remember to join in on conversations. Feel free to repost links to your media articles, but don't be that person who posts too much! Share your spokespeoples work.
/9 If you've been asked to give a TV interview then you're story is a hit! Make sure you have good lighting and think about putting your webcam on a stand. Turn your nerves into excitement! Here's a link on how to light your face if you have glasses:
/9 You did it! It's very normal to feel exhausted, but be proud of your achievement and the thought of inspiring the next generation of workers in your field. After the dust settles, evaluate what worked and what didn't to improve for next time. Be the change you want to see!
Finally, seek support from your institution's media advisors. They are your guardian angels! Thank you so much to @AndreaWild!
